Vipul's RazorSo we recently added Vipul’s Razor to our SpamaGator Email Gateway Appliance. Great but what the heck is it? Well according to the official website, here is the definition: "Vipul's Razor is a distributed, collaborative, spam detection and filtering network. Through user contribution, Razor establishes a distributed and constantly updating catalogue of spam in propagation that is consulted by email clients to filter out known spam.” |
Basically, the Razor looks at the text of an email and computes it’s spam signature based on different criteria, By connecting to the Razor network as message is being processed, the Razor uses a variety of preprocessors to create a “hash” table based on a random numerical score, and encoded in base 64. Because spammers are unable to determine the score, because they can’t determine what part of the message will be hashed. The Razor also, converts HTML to plain text for analysis, and also employs heuristics as part of its TeS (Truth Evaluation System). The system assigns a confidence score from 0-100 in every evaluation. The user can set an acceptable level in the Razor configuration. The Razor also has multiple filtration engines that encapsulate different filtration services, such as SHA1, VR3, and VR4. New engines can be plugged in the Razor when required. Finally, the Razor accepts an entire body of spam unknown to the system, and computes new Ephemeral signatures every X number of hours, and updates the seed database as well. 
I am including a clip from a Razor processed e-mail in this article to demonstrate it’s scoring in a processed e-mail from our SpamaGator. Vipul’s Razor is an elegant, well designed system that used with MailScanner, makes a more powerful tool in combating spam. |
