If you haven’t heard about OpenDNS then your missing the boat on what maybe one of the best freebies on the net. Simply put OpenDNS is a free DNS server that is very fast (faster than my ISP) and allows you to do some basic web filtering to block out sites that may contain nudity, pornography, lingerie, sexuality, tasteless (torture and other dreck) and proxy / anonymizer sites. A real bonus of OpenDNS is the speed of their DNS servers compared to many ISP’s. One of the major causes of “slow internet” is that most ISP’s have very crowded and slow servers that can dramatically slow page requests. |
OpenDNS puts it this way “OpenDNS has servers situated strategically at the most well-connected intersections of the Internet. Unlike your ISP, our network uses Anycast routing technology, which means no matter where you are in the world your DNS requests are answered by our closest datacenter. Anycast routing also means that you are automatically routed to our next closest datacenter in the event of maintenance or downtime. This makes your Internet faster and more reliable.” You can also white/black list sites independently of the filters. OpenDNS also protects you against known Phishing sites. The company employs iGuard to work it’s DNS magic. The setup is extremely simple. Once you create a free account, just follow the easy to follow directions for your particular network. For us, it was a matter of changing the DNS settings in our Link-sys router, and rerunning the the internet wizard in Small Business Server 2003. The real fun begins by selecting the content you want to filter. After a month of using the service, we have found it highly effective in blocking adult sites, as well as the sites we blacklisted. Open DNS provides some analysis with it’s Stats and Logs settings. Although a little slow to bring these up, you can get a graphical view of DNS requests from your IP, the number and type of sites blocked, and the hours of usage, unique domains and IP’s. So how does OpenDNS make money? Well, if you mistype a website, OpenDNS returns with a Google like page with paid advertising, which is tastefully done, and is unobtrusive. For smaller companies that can’t afford more robust web monitoring tools, OpenDNS comes highly recommended. Oh on a humorous note you just got check out this hilarious video from Chris Pirillo about OpenDNS: http://www.opendns.com/giftofsafe | |
