Recently FrugalBrothers Software partnered with StorageCraft to offer their complete line of Backup and Disaster Recovery solutions. I have seen a lot of different backup solutions in my day but nothing as easy to use, and fool proof as ShadowProtect Server. After completing an online webinar, I walked away extremely impressed. One of the more amazing features of the software allows to you to do either a cold state, or hot state back up of your server, and restore to entirely different hardware. StorageCraft was able to take a working Windows 2003 Server, mount the image in VMware and boot the server on a laptop! |
I installed my copy on my Small Business Server and my member servers. I installed the GUI interface on my XP Pro machine, and followed the easy to use wizards to schedule my backups to a shared USB drive on the network. Within minutes ShadowProtect Server created a full backup on my servers. ShadowProtect Server creates a full backup first, and then schedules incremental backups on a custom schedule; I set mine, to once an hour. As I understand it, ShadowProtect Server works by making exact copies of the sectors of the volumes on your hard drives. The software compressed my 30 Gig Boot Volume with 12 Gig of data to 3.7 Gigs. You can easily mount the backup volumes and explore them just like any other drive. The ability to move your working O/S and apps to another machine is an amazing capability, and can make upgrading a breeze. Another cool feature starting with the recently released version 3.0, will allow you to easily take a hot backup of your server, and turn it into a virtual disk for VMware. StorageCraft tells me, that the product also supports Microsoft Virtual Server as well. Many IT professionals will want to evaluate this product as part of their overall disaster recovery program. StorageCraft also offers its ShadowProtect IT product. This tool boots a machine from cold state if necessary, and allows you to back up the machine to a USB drive or another volume. You can install multiple Operating Systems and quickly restore via another image. You can browse the image, mount it. You can also virtualize it. The IT version is licensed per technician who can use it on as many servers as they wish. I’ll be following up with more detailed information as our testing goes. I highly recommend this product! |
